When Is a Replacement Car Rental Right for You?
- After a crash or accident. Ideal if your car has been in an accident and needs to stay in the garage for a long time. A replacement car rental keeps your daily life and travel running smoothly without interruption.
- Waiting for spare parts. If your car has to stay at the service center for several weeks waiting for imported or hard-to-find parts, you can use one of our rental cars right away, so getting to work stays easy.
- Multi-day servicing. For major scheduled maintenance, an engine overhaul or a full respray that takes several days, having a backup car saves you the hassle of relying on public transport.
- Insurance repairs and claims. Ideal if you’re making an insurance claim and need a temporary car while waiting for repairs. We provide proper official receipts that you can use to claim loss-of-use compensation (if your policy covers it).
Is a Replacement Car Rental Different from a Regular Car Rental?
The cars you get with a replacement car rental are the same as with a regular rental, but there are usually a few differences:
1. Rental Price
Replacement car rentals are usually cheaper than regular rentals. People renting a replacement car mostly drive back and forth between the places they go every day, which are usually not far from home or work, so they use the car less than people renting for other purposes.
2. Rental Documents
For a replacement car rental, the documents usually focus on your car and the repair, such as the registration of the car being repaired, the claim form, and the vehicle receipt from the service center or garage. This differs from regular rentals, which often require a credit card. (Some rental companies, however, use the same documents for every type of rental.)
3. Rental Conditions
Most replacement car rentals have a mileage limit, for example no more than 200 km per day. If you go over the limit, you’ll be charged for the extra kilometers.
Is It Better Value to Rent a Replacement Car or Use Public Transport?
It depends on how you travel. A replacement car rental is better value than public transport in the following cases:
- You need to go to several places each day, such as dropping off and picking up your kids, going to work, shopping for groceries or meeting clients. Taking several taxi or ride-hailing trips usually costs more than a day’s car rental.
- Your home and workplace are very far apart. A replacement car rental is much cheaper than taking taxis.
- You want convenience — no waiting for a ride to show up, and no worrying about taxis refusing to take you.
- You want to control your travel budget. With a rental car, it’s much easier to estimate your costs than with public transport.
- You want safety. Public transport means sharing space with many people, which can expose you to risks such as germs, crime (like robbery or theft) and accidents caused by others (like being pushed over in a crowd).
